I finally have the time, anyone who lives abroad yearns for and definitely utilizing it to the fullest before work calls. First place to stop on my vacation list is Nigeria and as one who loves her local dishes, best believe Imo State Nigeria would top the chart.

As a traveler with a penchant for historical, cultural destinations, my recent holiday in Owerri, the capital city of Imo State in Nigeria, left an indelible mark on my soul, although I spent my formative years in Imo State. Nestled in the heart of Eastern Nigeria, Owerri is a vibrant tapestry of culture, history, and contemporary living, offering travelers a truly immersive experience.

Sam Mbakwe Airport Imo State, Nigeria.

As I embarked on my journey to vacation and explore the vibrant city of Owerri, Nigeria, my first encounter with the State was through the gateway of Sam Mbakwe Airport.
Imo State: Sam Mbakwe Airport Named in honor of the esteemed former governor of Imo State (Dee Sam Mbakwe), the airport exuded a sense of pride and hospitality from the moment I stepped off the plane.

For context The building of the airport commenced with the administration of the first civilian governor of the old Imo State (now, Imo, Abia and Southern Ebonyi states), Dee Sam Mbakwe, in 1983, from generous contributions of the indigenes and people of the state and throughout the Igbo land. It is to be noted that while this is the first state owned airport, it is worthy to acknowledge also that it is the first community driven airport project ever known, at least, in the West of Africa. The project also enjoyed immense support from successive Federal Military Governments especially under Navy Captain James N.J. Aneke, who saw to its completion, commissioning and operational commencement on 15th July 1994, under the late General Sani Abacha.

Arriving at Sam Mbakwe Airport, I was immediately struck by its compact yet efficient layout. The terminal building, though modest in size, exuded a sense of warmth with its welcoming architecture and vibrant decor. As I made my way through the arrivals hall, I was greeted by friendly airport staff who offered assistance with a genuine smile, setting the tone for my entire Owerri experience.

Navigating through the terminal was a breeze, thanks to clear signage and well-organized facilities. Despite the bustling atmosphere, there was a sense of orderliness that prevailed, reflecting the airport’s commitment to ensuring a smooth travel experience for all passengers.

One of the highlights of my time at Sam Mbakwe Airport was the opportunity to explore the airport’s amenities. From browsing through souvenir shops to consciously taking mental note of airline that operate in Owerri (as I wanted to try out another airline service beside Airpeace on my way back), there was no shortage of ways to pass the time before boarding. I also appreciated the airport’s complimentary Wi-Fi, allowing me to stay connected with loved ones and share updates from my travels.

But perhaps what left the most lasting impression on me was the genuine warmth and hospitality of the people I encountered at Sam Mbakwe Airport. Whether it was the airport staff going above and beyond to assist passengers or fellow travelers exchanging friendly greetings, there was a sense of camaraderie that permeated the air, making me feel right at home.

As I bid farewell to Sam Mbakwe Airport and embarked on touring Imo State, I couldn’t help but reflect on the memorable experience I had encountered within its walls. From its efficient facilities to its warm hospitality, the airport served as the perfect introduction to the vibrant city of Owerri, leaving me eager to explore all that this enchanting region has to offer.

Considering I would be staying for awhile, I rested for weeks from Jetlag, tried acclimatising to the hot weather and continuously hoped for rain as I was beginning to suffer from heat rash and heat burn.

Once, it rained and the weather became bearable, I set out for the only shoprite Owerri mall which houses alot of other businesses including Genesis Deluxe Cinema.

No visit to Owerri would be complete without a trip to the iconic Eke Ukwu Market.

Eke Ukwu Market, Imo State Nigeria Eke Ukwu Market Imo State

During my formative years, this market was a place in Imo State I frequented literally every week to stock up food items. My shock when I heard it was being demolished during the previous Governor’s reign. He definitely might have had good intention for the space but considering its history and peculiarities, it doesn’t seem like his intentions were welcomed.

The market isn’t as bubbly as it was when I lived here but it is still functional. From the moment I stepped foot in this bustling marketplace, I was engulfed in a whirlwind of sights, sounds, and smells. Vendors peddled their wares with infectious enthusiasm, while the aroma of freshly food produce filled the air.

I enjoyed the fact I could still  purchase fresh food products alongside other items on my market list. The haggling of price is a skill I was happy to have intact because it came in handy when needed. Price negotiation is different in Nigeria when compared to some other European countries I have visited. While in the market, the rule of thumb is you still have to be alert as items can be easily kept safe by others without the owner’s knowledge (you get what I mean).Relief Market Imo state

I took the liberty of joining in weekly shopping at Relief market which is another market in Imo State Nigeria, currently frequented since the trial Eke Ukwu Market went through. Just like the other market, it gets closed by 18:00 and the last thing you would ever want is to be locked inside the market. You would certainly come out but you would part with some money and few reminders regarding being friends with your time piece.

As one who spent her formative years including her first degree from Imo State,  the University Imsu was certainly a place I wanted to revisit after 10 years and off I went to Imo State University Nigeria.

Imo State University Nigeria.

Imo State University Nigeria Imo State University (IMSU) is a renowned institution of higher learning located in Owerri, the capital city of Imo State, Nigeria. Founded in 1981, IMSU has grown to become one of the leading universities in Nigeria, known for its commitment to academic excellence, research, and community engagement.

As a visitor this time to Owerri, I had the opportunity to explore the sprawling campus of IMSU and witness firsthand again the vibrant academic community that thrives within its walls. Spread across acres of lush greenery, the campus is a sight to behold, with modern facilities and well-maintained grounds that provide an inspiring setting for learning and discovery.

One of the highlights of my visit to IMSU was the chance to engage with students and faculty members, who welcomed me with open arms and shared their passion for knowledge and innovation. I had beautiful encounters and conversations that left imprints, although some thought I am a student, however I always got caught when they ask which department and I would reply I am an alumni. This always led to follow up questions that I was willing to answer to an extent.

Nonetheless, whether attending lectures, participating in seminars, or exploring the university’s extensive library resources, it was clear that IMSU is still dedicated to nurturing the intellectual growth and development of its students.

In addition to its academic programs, IMSU is also home to a vibrant cultural and social scene, with a wide range of clubs, organizations, and events that cater to diverse interests and backgrounds. From sports tournaments and theatrical performances to art exhibitions and academic conferences, there is always something exciting happening on campus.

But perhaps what impressed me most about IMSU was its commitment to serving the wider community. Through outreach programs, research initiatives, and community partnerships (there were banners and bill boards around showing what was going on), the university plays a vital role in addressing social, economic, and environmental challenges facing Imo State and beyond. From healthcare initiatives to sustainable development projects, IMSU is actively contributing to the betterment of society in meaningful and impactful ways.

Another impressive thing about Imo State University Nigeria,  is there stand on indecent dressing. There’s even a bill board within the campus, once you drive to the center that shows the ban on indecent dressing and it leaves a good taste for those who promote modest dressing always.

In the end, my time in Owerri, Imo State, left me with memories that will last a lifetime. From the vibrant markets to the tranquil lakeshores, this city captured my heart in a way that few places ever have. And as I bid farewell to this enchanting corner of Eastern Nigeria, I knew that Owerri would always hold a special place in my wanderlust-filled soul.
