One of the creative black designers whose legacy lives on even after death is Virgil Abloh. He is a legend in the creative industry who would have been 42 years today and who might have come up with new ideas or even finishing touches that would have been amongst the Spring 2023 designs displayed yesterday during the Off-White show.
Irrespective of the absence of his physical presence, it’s safe to say that the brand Off-White which he founded in 2023, ensured his legacy isn’t forgotten despite how challenging it’s been to fill up his Virgil Abloh big shoe. This was affirmed during last night’s Off-White show by the Image and Art Director of the brand Ibrahim Kamara.
In Kamara’s words “it’s about celebrating his legacy” and upon being probed further He buttressed that the “beauty of Off-White is that you are involved in every single detail of the brand. And although my role is image-based, I was able to investigate with the team as they built this collection. It’s a broader role than I expected when I stepped into it, and it’s a beautiful role, and I am very lucky.”
Virgil Abloh is known to be one of those rare minds that think ahead, hence a Spring 2023 collection that was in the works before his demise in 2021 which was brought to reality by Kamara and the team. With a man who is believed to be ahead, always in another universe, it comes as no surprise that the collection turned out beautiful relaying the message it was intended for.
The show pulled a crowd, recorded a success and was well attended by celebrities. Some of the collections displayed by beautiful new models that complemented the designs are already up on their website and if truth be told unreservedly, these designs are a sight to behold.
