I have written this post, rescheduled and deleted several times for some reasons .
Over time, seeing people who are always lively get withdrawn all of a sudden/after sometime or seeing people exude this unexplainable liveliness gets me thinking something might be wrong and of course something is/was wrong most times which brings about this post – Depression.
Not once or twice have I heard depression is not peculiar to Africa from my fellow Africans, things like depression isn’t a man’s disorder, it’s more for the women… yadi yadi yadi
“Hexuse” you!
Who told you that? Who lied to you using such line? What gave you such idea from the pit of hell that men nor Africans don’t suffer depression. Bia enyi can you kindly shurrup if you are not a million persons in one speaking for everyone.
It’s ok to orient your mindset that way bhet you should not sideline the fact that depression can happen to anyone irrespective of age, gender, race or any other category you can think off.
Depression is real and kills which is when suicidal thoughts begin to creep in but the good news is that, it’s curable.
It doesn’t really take a lot for one to become depressed. Sometime last month or so a business man was accused of rape and he opted out of life before he could be cleared of the accusation. yes I understand being accused of rape is huge and a dent to someone’s name but taking life isn’t the way out of it. Same fellas who encouraged him to go ahead when he tweeted this, came around to say another gibberish … like wow!
Atleast, it was a relief when this doctor pointed this out. Well, whether he finally took his life or not the point is, he could have been saved from such thoughts and we all can do better.
Not long after that, this happened. Difference being, she’s a lively fellow and suddenly stopped being lively.
For some reasons, this wasn’t due to E-bully but from family. Family that should be protection unit, like where you run/ go to and you have peace of mind. A life that could have equally been saved and permit me to remind the “it’s not an African disorder people” that these separate events occurred in an African country.
According to American Psychiatric Association Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how one feels, the way an individual thinks and acts.
Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease a person’s ability to function at work and at home.
Depression is different from being sad or grieved from death of someone close. It’s more than that though I tend to believe that if grief from loss of someone isn’t properly managed, it could lead to depression .
Unfortunately, causes of depression hasn’t been categorically stated but some risk factors are accused and they include
- Genetics
- Environmental factors: especially in violent thriving area, neglect and abuse filled environment
- Biochemical factors and
- Personality : Some Psych Personality types are linked to depression. Personality Type C Personality Type D have been discussed, click on them to find your personality type if you haven’t or still don’t know. A personality test is available on Psych Personality Test post incase one is still confused about their personality type .
I would have said this is how depression works but mba, it has no rudimentary form but when you observe any of these, reach out
- Feeling sad or having a depressed mood
- Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
- Changes in appetite — weight loss or gain unrelated to dieting
- Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much
- Loss of energy or increased fatigue
- Increase in purposeless physical activity (e.g., hand-wringing or pacing) or slowed movements and speech (actions observable by others)
- Feeling worthless or guilty
- Difficulty thinking, concentrating or making decisions
- Thoughts of death or suicide which is perceived as the easy way out for some individuals and I will like to say, it’s not true.
I really don’t know who this is for or what you are going through Depression is curable, thinking about death isn’t a way out. You weren’t carried in the womb for nine months to come and die just like that. You are more than what people think of/about you. You can do anything you choose to do, you are not a failure moreover people fail and start all over again, so can you start again and behind most success stories ever recorded, there were failure seasons but what is peculiar is that they never gave up and you shouldn’t .
You can do it, you can scale through, use every stone thrown at you to build your castle. Don’t stop till you’ve gotten there and don’t ever ever forget you are special to someone out there including to Chimnaza even though she has met or has never met you.
It’s worthy to note that it’s not a disorder one can snap out off. I have heard this too that’s why it’s encouraged to visit the psychologist/ psychiatrist for help- counselling.
Family and friends can give moral support when you notice someone is going through depression.
You can take this Depression test to check your mental status quo, it doesn’t take more than a few minutes.
